Environmental rights in spotlight

Environmental lawyer Naim Santos-Miller will present for the JCU Law Seminar Series.

James Cook University’s (JCU) Law Seminar Series is turning its attention to how the state’s Human Rights Act could help protect our environment.

Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) senior solicitor Naim Santoso-Miller will present The Right to a Healthy Environment on Monday, June 16, when he will explore how the Act could help recognise legal protections for clean air and safe water.

Townsville-raised Naim has practised for five years with the EDO, advising locals and community groups on a broad range of public interest environmental matters, including freedom of speech, cultural heritage, climate change and the Great Barrier Reef.

He focuses on proactive advocacy to targeted decision makers to minimise cost and time in litigation. He also engages in law-reform activities including writing reports and submissions, and appearing before parliamentary committees.

The free seminar will be held online and at JCU Cairns, Nguma-bada campus, Smithfield, at 1pm. The one-hour presentation is worth one CPD point.
