SCLA mourns life member

The Sunshine Coast Law Association is mourning the loss of Richard Hyett, the first life member of the SCLA and a former committee member.

In 2018, Proctor reported on Richard’s 60-year milestone in the profession, noting three generations of his family had practised law.

In a message to Sunshine Coast colleagues today, SCLA President Mala Heffernan said: “It is with deep sadness that we advise of the passing of Richard Hyett, a respected and much-admired member of our legal community.

“His commitment to the law spanned generations and jurisdictions. Colleagues admired his ability to evolve with the profession – from shelves of printed law reports to the digital immediacy of today’s practice. His adaptability, integrity, and passion for the law never waned.

“In 2018, Richard’s firm merged with Kruger Law, a fitting progression in a career marked by collaboration and mentorship.

“Outside of the courtroom, Richard was an avid sportsman and musician. He competed in four World Masters Games in rowing, winning three gold and one silver medal and played squash well into his later years.

“A gifted pianist, Richard continued to play regularly, finding in music a joyful contrast to the intensity of legal life.

“Richard’s presence, wisdom, and friendship will be sorely missed across the legal community.”

Richard’s funeral will be held on Thursday, 12 June, at 1pm at Gregson & Weight, Wises Road.

There will also be a Zoom link on their website for those who are unable to attend.
