Child safety inquiry seeks feedback

Practitioners can have their say on how the government acts as a parent to children in care, and how the child safety and youth justice systems overlap.

The Commission of Inquiry into Child Safety is calling for community input in its review of the effectiveness of the child safety system.

The Commissioner, the Honourable Paul Anastassiou KC, said there were serious questions about the connection between children in state care and the youth justice system.

“Around one-third of children in the youth justice system are also under child protection orders, and that overlap demands close scrutiny of whether the state is providing the care and support these children need,” he said.

“If you want to have a say on how the department parents children in care and why some end up involved in the youth justice system, then I encourage you to make a submission to the Commission.

“Community input is vital.”

Submissions will close on Friday, 23 January.
