Do Australians enjoy a “right” to protest in 2026?
That question will be posed by the Human Rights Law Association to three experts at a free online seminar later this month.
University of Sydney Emeritus Professor Simon Rice, Deakin Law School Associate Professor Maria O’Sullivan and Brisbane barrister Felicity Nagorcka will speak about how during and since the COVID-19 pandemic, the “right” of Australians to protest has been subject to significant law reform and litigation.
They will examine the implied right to political communication under the Constitution and the jurisdictions of New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.
They will also consider how human rights legislation in Queensland, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory is relevant, including the legislated right to peaceful assembly.
The seminar will be held from 5pm to 6.30pm on 20 May. Register here.
