Peter Greste to deliver flagship lecture for civil liberties’ council

Journalist Peter Greste after being freed from an Egyptian jail.

Journalist Peter Greste will deliver the Queensland Council for Civil Liberties’ flagship lecture in Brisbane later this month.

The civil liberties and press freedom advocate will speak on “Why good journalism is under more pressure than ever before, and with the world in crisis, why it has never been more important”, for the Derek Fielding Memorial Lecture on 28 May.

Mr Greste spent more than 400 days in an Egyptian prison between 2013 and 2015, after being falsely accused of terrorism offenses while working for Al Jazeera.

He will draw on his extraordinary first-hand experience of what happens when civil liberties are eroded and the rights of individuals are subordinated to the interests of the state.

The annual lecture, which is named after a prominent Queensland librarian, will be held from 6.15pm to 8pm at All Saints Convention Centre in the Brisbane CBD. It will also be livestreamed.
