Samantha Bolton awarded Sunshine Coast Law Association Life Membership

Former Queensland Law Society Councillor Samantha Bolton's contributions to the profession have been recognised.

When you hear or read the list of Samantha Bolton’s contributions to the legal profession, it is no wonder she was awarded Sunshine Coast Law Association Life Membership on Saturday.

A Director at Pippa Colman & Associates, Ms Bolton said she was “surprised, honoured and genuinely humbled” to receive the award for her outstanding service to the SCLA and the Sunshine Coast legal profession at the Justin Crosby Bursary Dinner.

“This event is one that is close to my heart and one of my favourite events of the year,” she said.

“What made the evening particularly special was not simply the recognition itself, but the incredible sense of community that exists within the legal profession on the Sunshine Coast.

“We work in an area of law that can often be demanding and emotionally heavy, which makes the support, collegiality and friendships within our profession all the more meaningful.”

The SCLA posted a tribute video to recognise that Ms Bolton “has made an extraordinary contribution to our legal community through her leadership, mentorship and ongoing support of the profession over many years. Her dedication and impact make her a truly deserving recipient of this honour.”

Friend and colleague Sarah Quilliam, Director – Pippa Colman & Associates, led the tribute video, saying: “This award recognises your outstanding contribution to the profession and to this Association.

“And of course, it’s very easy for me to rattle off all of your various outstanding contributions such as being President of this Association, President of the Suncoast Community Legal Service, a Councillor for the Queensland Law Society, ambassador for the Women’s Legal Service, board member for the Queensland chapter of the College of Law, and, of course and most importantly, fellow Sunshine Coast Rugby Union judiciary member – a very important job.

“You are also though a lawyer whose dedication to the community extends into your work as an independent children’s lawyer and separate representative for the children.

“You advocate on behalf of some of our most vulnerable people, selflessly and fearlessly.

“Those people will probably never be able to understand or properly appreciate the enormous amount of time, legal skill and fearless advocacy that you dedicate and devote to every single one of those legal matters.

“But this is frequently recognised by your peers, by your colleagues, and by the judiciary.”

Samantha Bolton accepted her life membership at Saturday’s gala dinner.

SCLA President Mala Heffernan, who has worked alongside Ms Bolton on the committee, said: “You are so deserving of this accolade. Your contribution to the profession and local legal community has been outstanding.

“You’ve spent so many years on the SCLA committee, including many years as President, organising countless social events and CPD evenings.

“And of course, you were the one who started the Justin Crosby Memorial Bursary Dinner. You then went on to become a QLS Councillor making a contribution to the profession more broadly. Over the years you have been such a wonderful mentor to so many lawyers, myself included.”

Co-Director Pippa Colman acknowledged her colleague’s legal and business prowess.

“I used to dread Sam Bolton being on the other side when I was a solicitor and she was in another firm. She was a very good lawyer. She fought hard for her clients. She never conceded a point, so it was a relief to me when she became a director in this firm in 2021,” Ms Colman said.

“She’s been responsible for a radical change in this practice. We have more direction, we have greater accountability and she’s formed a management team which is really helped us. She’s always willing to help. She always has the answer to every question.

“She does fabulous work as an ICL and to top it off she has a wicked sense of humour, and like me a love of inflatable Christmas decorations.”

SCLA life member and committee member Trent Wakerley said of Ms Bolton’s award: “It was always going to happen. It wasn’t a matter of if, it was a matter of when.”

He said while working on the committee he had seen “the amazing amount of time and effort you put in”.

“When you commit to something, we all know you’re going to give it 100 per cent. You are the epitome of what a SCLA life member is.”

Kyle Kimball, Principal – The K Advisory, said the “accolade and gong was well overdue” and “a fine acknowledgment by your peers here on the Sunshine Coast”.

“I don’t know how you do it all,” he said.

Former employer Simone Pearce, who said Ms Bolton had a great career in family law, said: “I do want to congratulate you for what has been a wonderful career, you have the respect of your peers, and you are a leader in the Sunshine Coast legal fraternity.

“Indeed, in the state you are a standout family lawyer with an impeccable reputation. Congratulations on having built for yourself a career that is based on integrity, pragmatism, great intelligence and good humour.”

Former colleague Erin O’Beirne, who first met Ms Bolton as a university lecturer, said: “There’s no one more deserving than you”, saying her mentor had “inspired me to be a better lawyer”.

Samantha had lots of support in the room.

Ms Bolton thanked everyone who contributed to the video shared on the night which also included Ross McSwan, Tim Jones, and Geoff Barr.

“Your words were generous, thoughtful and deeply appreciated (and there may have been a few tears involved when I got to watch the entire video later that night). To have colleagues, peers and friends speak so warmly was something I will never forget,” she said.

“I feel very fortunate to practise alongside such talented and caring professionals, and to be part of a legal community that consistently shows up for one another, supports younger practitioners and values connection as much as professional excellence.

“I am also incredibly fortunate to work alongside an exceptional team at Pippa Colman Family Law. The culture, care and commitment our team brings each day is something I never take for granted.

“In particular, I want to acknowledge co-directors Sarah and Pippa, whose support, friendship and leadership have meant so much to me professionally and personally. Building a firm alongside people who genuinely care about both their clients and each other is incredibly special.”
