A window into the workings of the Privy Council will be offered this month when the Selden Society presents the second lecture of its 2026 series.

Brisbane barrister Sandy Thompson KC will deliver The last appeal from Queensland to the Privy Council at the Banco Court in Brisbane on Thursday, 18 June.

The former Queensland Solicitor-General and former Queensland Bar Association president will share his experiences appearing as counsel in 1985 and 1986, the year of the last Queensland appeal to Her Majesty in Council.

Mr Thompson will also trace the legislative history of appeals to the Privy Council and their eventual abolition, when the Australia Act 1986 (Cth) and the Australia Act 1986 (UK) were enacted.

Light refreshments will be served in the Portrait Gallery after the lecture.
