LSC issues guide on use of titles

The Legal Services Commission has issued a regulatory guide on the use of titles used by the profession.

The guide addresses concerns about the potentially misleading use of titles such as “Partner”, “Principal” and “Director”.

“These titles carry significant implications and, when used incorrectly, may mislead clients, the public and even the courts about a practitioner’s role or authority,” the Commission said.

Developed in consultation with the Queensland Law Society, the guide advises on when practitioners are entitled to use these titles, and warns that misuse of the titles could result in breaches of the Legal Profession Act 2007 (Qld) and the Australian Solicitors Conduct Rules 2023

The guide will take effect from 1 August 2026. Read it here.
