Queensland’s Chief Justice has issued a fresh practice direction for people seeking no jury trials.
Chief Justice Helen Bowskill late yesterday issued a directive for people wishing to apply to the court – either prosecutors or defendants – for a judge-only trial under Queensland’s Criminal Code.
“A party who intends to apply for a no jury order must give to the Criminal List judge notice of that intention,” Justice Bowskill said.
“Notice is to be given in writing to the judge’s associate, and must be received before the application is filed.”
The courts also yesterday issued a warning for people attending court as Queensland grapples with an increasing widespread wave of COVID-19 infections.
QLS Proctor has been told the heads of Queensland’s three court jurisdictions, Chief Justice Bowskill, District Court Chief Judge Brian Devereaux SC and Chief Magistrate Janelle Brassington, yesterday issued upgraded advice about the wearing of face masks in court.
“All persons entering Queensland courts are strongly encouraged to wear face masks when inside court buildings,” the advisory reads.
