Free family lawyer service for Cairns residents during COVID-19 restrictions

The Legal Aid Queensland (LAQ) Family Law Duty Lawyer Service will be available by phone for electronic court sitting dates of the Federal Circuit Court in Cairns next week.

An LAQ spokesperson said the proposed duty lawyer service for the court’s scheduled sittings from 19-21 April 2021 would continue to operate by phone during the COVID-19 restrictions as it provided a legal lifeline to people representing themselves in family law matters.

People with scheduled electronic hearings should call 1300 267 762 up to three working days before their scheduled hearing to arrange a time to speak to the duty lawyer. The duty lawyer will then call them on their electronic hearing date.

During COVID-19, Queenslanders can get free legal information and advice by calling 1300 65 11 88 (between 8.45am and 4pm Monday to Friday), or by visiting legalaid.qld.gov.au.
