QCAT welcomes new appointments

Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal President Justice Kerri Mellifont today welcomed the appointment of the Honourable Peter Murphy SC, Julie Dick SC and David Reid as sessional members of QCAT. 

“We are very fortunate to have these three eminent judicial members join us at QCAT,” Justice Mellifont said.

Mr Murphy SC has been a lawyer for over 40 years. He first worked as a solicitor in commercial firms, before being called to the Bar in 1990. He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2004. In 2007, he was appointed as a judge of the Family Court of Australia. He served as a judge of the Family Court for 12 years before retiring in 2019.

Ms Dick SC was admitted as a barrister-at-law of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1975, and appointed as Senior Counsel in 1997. Ms Dick was then appointed as a District Court judge in 2000 and served as a judge for over 20 years until her retirement earlier this year.  During her time as a District Court judge, Ms Dick was a judge of the Childrens Court (2001-2022), President of the Childrens Court (2007-2010) and an acting judge in the Supreme Court of Queensland (2011-2012).

Mr Reid was the associate to Justice James Dunn, Supreme Court of Queensland, in 1975 and was later admitted as a barrister in 1977. Mr Reid worked as a barrister until 1992. He was then admitted as a solicitor and practised until 2002 before returning to practise as a barrister until appointed to the District Court of Queensland on 19 February 2010. He worked mostly on the criminal law list until he retired on 22 September 2021 after over 10 years as a District Court judge.
