Rebecca Fogerty, an Accredited Specialist in Criminal Law, will be Queensland Law Society President in 2024 after nominations closed yesterday.

There was a record 28 nominations for the role of Ordinary Councillor, one nomination for President, two nominations for Deputy President and three nominations for Vice President.

In accordance with rule 33(1)(a) of the Legal Profession (Society) Rules 2007, Rebecca, who was elected Vice President in July 2022, will take up the role on 1 January.

“I am humbled by this opportunity to serve Queensland’s solicitors,” she said. “I will work my hardest to advocate for the profession and for justice generally.”  

During the election, Rebecca had said she wished to use her experience to contribute more meaningfully to the legal and wider community.

“I will continue to advocate for our profession and participate in professional and community discourse about our justice system in an intelligent and responsible manner.”

She is a founding partner of Jasper Fogerty Lawyers and has been a QLS Councillor since 2021.

Rebecca sits on the Executive and Finance and Risk Management Committees. She was the first female Chair of the Criminal Law Committee, and sat on the Criminal Law Specialist Accreditation Committees in 2018, 2020 and 2022.

Rebecca was the Queensland Member for the Professional Standards Councils in 2020-2022.

As there were more nominations than vacancies for the positions of Deputy President, Vice President and Ordinary Member of Council, the QLS membership will go to the polls.

The names of all running candidates and biographies are available for viewing on the QLS candidates page. Candidates are listed in the order drawn by electronic lot in accordance with r35(2) of the Rules.

Voting opens on Friday 29 September. Members will receive an email from True Vote (using the domain name truevote.com.au). The email will include voting instructions and a link to the online ballot.
