As Queenslanders brave a hot and wet summer, Legal Aid is offering a free webinar for those who help people hit by natural disasters.
The Disaster legal help – panel discussion and Q&A session on February 21 is aimed at support workers, financial counsellors and community lawyers.
The panel will be led by Legal Aid Queensland Assistant Director, Disaster Relief, Paul Holmes. Joining him will be Townsville Community Law Principal Solicitor Bill Mitchell and AFCA Senior Manager Insurance Dion Newburn.
This session will cover:
- the legal support available for people who have experienced a disaster such as a storm, cyclone, flood or bushfire;
- common legal issues after a disaster, such insurance claim refusals, delays, spiralling debt and problems with temporary accommodation; and
- further support and top tips.
“This is a great opportunity for the profession to hear and learn from experienced professionals who have been working in the disaster space for decades,” Paul said.
“I am looking forward to chatting with an expert panel to discuss the key legal issues, including insurance, affecting consumers following the most recent disasters that have affected Queensland.
“We will be talking through the key processes during the life of an insurance claim, including the important role the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) plays in affording consumers access to justice.”
Disaster legal help – panel discussion and Q&A webinar will be held on Wednesday, 21 February, from 2pm to 3pm. It will include Auslan interpretation. Register here.
