Queensland Law Society welcomes the State Government’s proposal to put a permanent stop to the release of personal information for private car park enforcement.
The Queensland Government has announced it will be legislating to prevent unfair private car park enforcement practices and the current pause on access to information for private car park enforcement will continue until these amendments are implemented.
This action is in response to community concern surrounding fines for minor parking infringements and the use of personal information for enforcement.
QLS Privacy, Data, Technology and Intellectual Property Committee chair Anna Sharpe said the committee applauded the government’s positive commitment to privacy and the protection of personal information.
“The preservation of privacy and personal information is essential to modern society,” Anna said.
“Individuals providing personal information to government agencies consent to the collection of personal information for specified purposes. The release of personal information for enforcement of private car park conditions raises privacy concerns.
“We look forward to reviewing the Bill and to engaging with the Parliamentary Committee process in due course.”
The Department of Transport and Main Roads is one of the largest holders of personal information in Queensland. See the TMR media statement here.Â
