Queensland Law Society President Genevieve Dee and Immediate Past President Rebecca Fogerty were invited to present at the LAWASIA Family Law and Children’s Rights Conference (FLCRC) in Penang in June.

The Family Law and Family Rights Committee of LAWASIA held the ninth conference in Malaysia from 12-14 June. The FLCRC returned to an in-person conference and presented a forum for family law practitioners, academics, the judiciary and mental health professionals.

The current and past Presidents were honoured to speak to an international audience, providing an update about Australia’s family and criminal law legislative responses to non-violent forms of domestic violent.

The conference highlighted the significant attention that non-violent domestic violence is now receiving in the South-East Asian region, notwithstanding the variation between different legal systems.

“Australia is world leading in its approach to properly recognising coercive control and other non-violent forms of abuse, and as such there are tremendous opportunities for Queensland solicitors to engage with and work alongside our colleagues in other jurisdictions,” Genevieve said.

Another issue that was recognised at the conference was the ongoing importance of wellbeing in the profession.

“Australia, and especially Queensland, is a very progressive jurisdiction when it comes to our discourse about lawyers’ wellbeing and the ways we can develop a comprehensive response to this issue. This issue will clearly grow over the next decade, and Queensland lawyers are well placed to contribute in a substantial way,” Rebecca said.

They had the opportunity to engage with international attendees including former LawAsia President Dr Gordon Hughes, Incoming LawAsia President Yap Teong Liang and senior colleagues from the UK, Malasia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The conference presented an important opportunity to continue to develop closer international ties with regional legal stakeholders and highlight Queensland as a regional hub for legal practice.
