Law students may be interested to know that this year’s Queensland Law Society Legal Careers Expo is perfectly timed with the start of QLS Seasonal Clerkship and Graduate Recruitment season.
The must-attend event will be held on Monday, 11 May, from 1.30pm-4.30pm at the Sofitel Brisbane Central with registrations now open.
Making decisions around graduate or seasonal clerkship placements can be overwhelming so information will be available at the Expo and QLS created the guidelines for this reason.
They aim to provide students and firms transparency and consistency through the legal recruitment process and allows you the time to simultaneously consider offers received and make an informed decision that is right for you.
At this year’s QLS Legal Careers Expo, students can also visit the Legal Pathways Lounge and hear from professionals who have built their careers in different ways from in-house and community legal work to regional practice and boutique firms.
Attendees also have the opportunity to discuss the admissions process with the Better Call Sarah panel if they missed the recent QLS student event and connect with professionals to learn more about their career journeys and experiences in the profession.
Popular past features such as Resume Rescue and LinkedIn Lifesaver return along with the opportunity to have professional headshots taken.
QLS Engagement Coordinator Julie Hodgson, former Career Consultant with QUT and Griffith universities, said whatever stage a student was at there would be something at the expo for them.
“Whether it’s talking directly with recruiters about their clerkship and graduate programs, for those nearing the end of their studies, or a first year just starting to explore the myriad of opportunities available to them in the legal profession,” she said.
“We’ll have a diverse range of experienced legal practitioners to talk to – inhouse, government, micro to small firms, large firms, representatives from the legal assistance sector such as LawRight and Women’s Legal Service Queensland.
“Representatives from the QLS Future Leaders Committee (early career lawyers), the QLS Disability and Accessibility Network, First Nations Committee, Pride in Law and the Qld Women’s Lawyers Association, and many areas of practice such as family law, criminal, administrative civil, and native title, to name but a few, will all be there to support them.
“It’s never too early to start building your legal profile, so come to the LCE to hear directly from the profession on how to best position yourself for success.”
The expo starts at 1.30pm with networking drinks and nibbles from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. Entry to the Legal Careers Expo is free for current QLS student members.
If you are not a student member yet, QLS student membership costs $10 per year and is open to all law students studying in Queensland.
