Queensland Protection Commission on way

The Queensland Protection Commission will operate from 1 February next year after the passing of the Queensland Protection Commission Bill 2026 today.

The commission will be the State’s first dedicated child and vulnerable person safeguarding authority, consolidating key functions including the Reportable Conduct Scheme, Working with Children Check (Blue Card) Scheme and Disability Worker Screening Scheme (Yellow Card) under a single regulator.

It will incorporate an Intelligence Hub to identify and assess risks of harm to children, enabling earlier intervention and stronger safeguarding responses.

Penalties will also be strengthened for relevant offences under the Working with Children Check Act and Child Safe Organisations Act.

The changes were prompted by theChild Death Review Board’s In Plain Sight report, which exposed critical system failures in responding to child sexual abuse.

QLS advocated for the introduction of the commission. Read the Society’s submission on the Bill here.
