Practitioners appearing on behalf of the State or its agencies at coronial inquests will be expected to comply with new Model Inquest Principles (MIPs).
The MIPs have been issued at the direction of Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman.
They align with existing Model Litigant Principles and expand the underlying intent that the power of the State is used for the public good and in the public interest.
They also contribute to the reform work under way within the coronial system initiated by the Queensland Audit Office’s 2019 performance audit report, ‘Delivering Coronial Services’.
The MIPs are to be applied flexibly and do not override any legislative requirement or authority concerning an agency’s functions..
