Cairns hosts Mabo Oration for 1st time

The 20th anniversary of the Mabo Oration will be held in Cairns for the first time.

The culturally significant event, on 30 May, is organised biennially by the Queensland Human Rights Commission in partnership with Queensland Performing Arts Centre and the Mabo family.

The oration celebrates and pays tribute to Eddie Mabo and the landmark High Court decision bearing his name, which legally recognised that Indigenous people had a special relationship to the land that existed before colonisation.

This year’s oration will be delivered by Katie Kiss, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC), with Commissioner C’Zarke Maza from the Office of the Commissioner (Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa – Torres Strait Islander Traditional Child Rearing Practice) hosting the event, and dance performances by Gerib Sik Mer Island Dance Troupe.

There will be a smoking ceremony at 5.30pm before Friday’s oration at 6pm at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre, Florence Street.

Tickets and for more information are available at the Queensland Human Rights Commission website.
