Applications to the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board hit a five-year high in the last financial year, according to board’s 2024-2025 annual report.
The report, tabled in September, stated the board considered about 1338 applications for admission with those applications being listed in Brisbane or one of the regional centres of Rockhampton, Townsville or Cairns.
In 2023-24, the board received 1119 applications, followed by 1195 in 2022-23, 1209 in 2021-22 and 1319 in 2020-21.
In considering the applications in 2024-25, the board recommended about 1114 applicants with about 132 applicants recommended with conditions and 96 other determinations, such as issuing a notice under s40 requesting an applicant provide additional information.
Some of these applications have since been successful while others remaining adjourned to a future date when the applicant chooses to proceed.
The board received about 92 applications for assessment and/or reassessment of overseas academic qualifications, and 24 applications for assessment and/or reassessment of PLT and experience in practice attained overseas.
The highest number of applications for assessment/reassessment of overseas qualifications came from the United Kingdom (including England, Scotland and Northern Ireland) 42 followed by India 10.
The board also considered 28 applications from law firms wishing to register law graduates under the supervised traineeship scheme during the reporting period.
