Retired judge to share lessons at family law conference

Retired District Court Judge Alexander “Sandy” Horneman-Wren will call on his experiences with children in the court when speaks at a conference in Toowoomba this week.

His Honour will present Some observations about trauma in young people. Causes, consequences and cautionary tales, at the Family Law Conference 2026, organised by the Family Law Pathways Network Toowoomba and South West Queensland.

He will be one of a range of speakers at Thursday’s event, which is designed not just for family lawyers but for any professional who works with separating families.

Other speakers will include former Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia Senior Judicial Registrar Anne-Marie Rice, who will discuss Problem solving in an adversarial system. Achieving the impossible, and Independent Children’s Lawyers Lyrene Wiid and Maree Stocks, who will speak on Between jurisdictions: a hypothetical. Navigating risk at the intersection of child protection and family law.

The conference, worth two CPD points, will be held on Thursday, 21 May, from 8.45am to 4.30pm, at the Micah Centre in South Toowoomba.
