Guest speaker Claudia Cameron presented a job offer to those gathered at the Queensland Law Society’s (QLS) Best Lawyers Breakfast in Brisbane today.

CS Energy’s General Counsel told the more than 100 people, who were at Customs House to celebrate the profession’s high achievers, that the role would be dynamic and demanding.

“The organisation that you will work for will be the subject of a regulatory investigation, be served with class action proceedings, will have a significant incident at site, will be the subject of a ransomware attack, and the market in which you operate will be suspended,”  she said.

“Oh, and there will be a global pandemic as well. And you’ll pretty much have to change how you do business overnight.”

Last year’s QLS In-House Counsel of the Year admitted this was not “the screenplay for the final season of Billions, but the lived experience of my legal team”.

Claudia drew on more than two decades of corporate experience to promote the role of the in-house counsel during the breakfast, which is an annual salute to lawyers recognised by the QLS Excellence in Law Awards, or by publications such as Best Lawyers, Doyle’s Guide, Chambers Asia Pacific, Legal 500 Asia Pacific and Lawyers Weekly 30 Under 30.

QLS Immediate Past President Kara Thomson spoke of the significance of the peer review process behind Best Lawyers.

“Spanning 76 nations, the global recognition program aims to gather the consensus of leading lawyers about the professional abilities of their colleagues within the same region and legal practice area,” Kara said.

“While there’s no doubt that any kind of professional recognition is an honour, there is perhaps none more significant than that conferred on a lawyer by their peers.

“As we celebrate your distinguished professional recognition today, we acknowledge your leadership, unique skillset and professionalism.

“We also applaud the confidence your colleagues have in your strength as a leading practitioner among your peers today, and for those early career lawyers who aspire to follow in your footsteps.”
